Top 5 Fur Accessories

Mink jackets are hot this time of the year, but other fur accessories are on sale: Here are our top 5 favorite:

1. The knitted mink scarf: a perfect companion for mink jackets, this scarf comes in a variety of colors, like pink, brown and black.
2. Handbag or clasp: A handbag is beautiful for semi-formal occasions, and a black lizard clasp with Swarovski crystal is perfect for pairing with that little black dress.
3. Hats and headbands: Fox to match with your fox fur coats or mink to go with mink fur coats, although matching isn’t as important as you might imagine – sometimes having two different furs can be complementarily fashionable. They come in all different styles, from fedoras to berets to stretch hats, the list goes on.
4. Vests: For the fall, you don’t want to wear your mink jackets too early – you want a lighter option. Among these are shawls, capes and capeletes, too.
5. Keychains: I was at a party among debutantes and socialites when what did I see, but a hip young man with a fox tail hanging by his side. It was as though he were a fox himself, the devil! I inquired as to the meaning of it all, after giving him my compliments, and he responded that it was an adult form of the lucky rabbit foot keychain, though instead of a foot, he had a white fox tail.

The Man-Fur

Mens fur coats are extraordinarily fashionable. Anyone can tell you so. Who says that the luxury and mystique of fur should only be for women?

Man-furs as they are sometimes called, are very popular because they are so warm. Many men view wearing fur as a noble symbol dating back to the kings of Europe. In all different styles – from the ranch fur coat to the bomber fur to mink jackets with detachable hoods, to car coats and double breasteds, you can definitely find something that suits you. As a result, you will stay warmer than anyone who decides to wear simple pea coats and trench coats.

Even if you think that an entirely fur coat may be too much for your personal style, you can start small. You can choose a fur collar to wear on a coat, or maybe a fur lining on the inside. And if you still feel uneasy, try wearing a mink trooper hat with a leather crown. This will help you stay warm and ease into a new fashion if you have never worn fur before.

Men’s furs are decidedly posh – try to let anyone tell you otherwise. And if you disagree, then you shouldn’t wear one; you won’t have the confidence to pull it off.

Wearing My Fur

When it’s cold outside, and I really want to warm up, I think about fur coats. Then I go to the closet and look at my mink fur coats, and choose one to wear. Slowly lifting it off the hanger, making sure that each side is delicately removed, I feel the thick, soft fur.

Dense and shiny, the fur is a deep, dark brown. I place one arm in a sleeve, and lifting the other side up above my other shoulder, I insert my other arm into the warm sleeve. The coat is heavy, and its smell is musky, and comforting. When I smooth the fur to keep it the direction in one grain, its sheen reflects the light of my foyer, and it shimmers as I move. It tickles my chin when I bring the two sides together so that it covers my neck completely. It reaches past my knees and, enveloped, I feel like a queen of a kingdom.

When I step outside, the fur rustles from the wind, but I feel nothing but warmth. Elegant, I stroll, watching snowflakes hit the ground and glisten on individual hairs of my coat. Nothing is as warm as animal fur coats, I think to myself, striding along. Nothing.

Fur Coats Are For Guys, Too.

Ladies love fur coats, and the majority of the fur market is geared toward female fashions but that doesn’t mean that men are completely left out. There are tons of sleek, stylish and refined fur coats available for men and they come in a wide variety of styles, cuts, colors, and fur types to suit any taste. When one thinks of traditional fur coat, an image of someone in a dramatic floor-length mink is conjured up. But that image is what a lot of men don’t like about wearing fur coats: they’re just too much, unless you’re a Russian czar or something.

But in actuality, there are tons of different, more subtle styles that constitute as fur coats. A few posts ago we mentioned reversible fur coats and how functional and fashionable they are. Well men’s fur coats come in reversible styles as well. There is one particular style men’s shear mink leather reversible jacket. That’s right—one side is soft, luxurious sheared mink and the other is sleek and rugged black leather. Another really cool option is the men’s fur car ranch coat in the black rabbit. This double-breasted knee length coat looks classy and stylish, without going over the top.

Caring for Your Fur is Easy!

When you invest in a fur, it's important to take care of your investment. Here are a few tidbits for how to ensure that your fur lasts forever.

Fur is very sensitive to heat and light. When you're not wearing your fur, you want to store it in a cloth bag that is open at the bottom in a dark room. Don't surround fur coats with other clothing, as that can depress the fur, making it look old and unhealthy. Be careful not to store fur coats in an area with mothballs, and take mink jackets to the furrier during the summer. Cold storage will keep the skin in good condition.

Furriers are the right guys to take care of your fur. Dry cleaners do not know about how to treat different kinds of mink jackets, or fox fur coats, and confusing how to do so can damage your coat.

If your fur gets wet, simply shake out the excess moisture and hang it to dry. Any extreme heat or light will dry the skin out and make it crack.

Other than that, just be careful not to catch your fur jacket on any jewelry or belts, and if you see a small tear, repair it before it gets worse.

Fox and Mink: Great Furs to Wear

Here is some information about the animals that give us mink fur coats and fox fur coats. These mammals are found in most temperate parts of the world and to cope with harsh winters, often have dense, thick fur.

Fox is a beautiful fur that comes in a wide array of colors. The white fox lives in the arctic and the brown fox lives almost on every continent. Most of the fur comes from Finland, including the Natural Red Fox and the Blue Fox. Foxes are omnivores and live off of smaller mammals, eggs, fish, birds, and insects. They also eat berries and grasses. Fox fur coats are especially warm and fashionable.

The mink is a small semi aquatic weasel -like mammal, of the American and the European sort. These animals are small, and while most reach only a couple of pounds, farm raised mink can be up to 7 lbs. Their fur is extremely dense, dark brown, with occasional spots (particularly on the European mink) and a dark under fur. Because of its density, mink fur coats are extraordinarily warm. Mink always live near water, and although sometimes they wander to prey on animals like rabbits, they keep within territorial bounds.

The History of Fur

Fur has long stood as one of the best ways to keep warm. Animals are naturally blessed with coats of thick hair. To utilize the entire animal after a hunting party, the hides of the animals were used. Our ancestors understood the importance of not wasting any part of the animal and consequently tied furs together to stay warm during the colder months.

The oldest form of clothing, fur has long been regarded as a symbol of power. The ermine was long worn by royalty throughout Europe. Many ermine furs are necessary to make mens fur coats or sashes and the collecting of these furs took time and skill, something that the powers of Western Europe could easily afford. Today fur remains a classic look that is timeless, especially during winter. Chic and elegant, furs will always remain a popular fashion.

The softness and luxuriousness of wearing fur cannot be outdone. Mink jackets and fox fur coats have been worn for more than 200,000 years. Wearing fur is part of humanity’s history, and it is part of a past that we cannot jettison. Wearing mink jackets remains a symbol of power and wealth, and plus, it’s warm and comfortable too.

Chinchilla: The Softest Fur Around

Mink fur coats are beautiful and soft. But if you want the softest fur on the market, think again. Chinchillas have some of the softest and densest fur in the world, thanks to their native Andean habitat, ranging from Peru to Chile. Living in crevices and hiding in burrow in high, cold mountains, these small rodents can also jump up to 6 ft. in the air!

The fur industry has recognized these little critters since the 16th century and even before that when the native Andeans wore Chinchilla furs. Chinchillas have about 60 hairs per follicle. But because chinchillas are so small, the average full sized coat can require up to 150 pelts, making their cost very high. Today most chinchillas are farmed because illegal chinchilla hunting has pushed the species close to extinction.

At Madison Avenue Furs, we have chinchilla lined mink jackets, as well as chinchilla collars and capes. We also have entire chinchilla jackets. These beautiful garments are available in plus size fur coats and we even have a chinchilla fur handbag to go with your collar and coat.

These products are elegant and distinguished, and are evenly colored grey and black. They turn heads wherever or whenever they are worn.

Fur is Green!

Mink fur coats are often the subject of great social outrage – “How can you wear that? It’s killing poor animals!” they say. What they don’t realize is that these animals are not farmed for their fur in the way that cattle are farmed for their meat; rather they are hunted in the same way the Indians used to hunt them, maintaining a delicate balance in wildlife populations and keeping the environment safe.

Faux mink jackets, on the other hand, are made from synthetic petrochemicals that never decompose, and besides, look cheap and don’t feel the same. By treating your fur with the respect that it deserves, by tanning it and keeping it in cold storage, you can make it last for years. Eventually, however, the fur will decompose and return to the earth in an organic process.

Mink fur coats are a great way to stay warm and are completely natural. Our cavemen ancestors used to wear mink jackets and fox fur coats to protect themselves against the bitter winters. Furs are resources that when respected and used properly complete the delicate balance between man and animals.

Mink fur coats are not just for fashion, they are a way to respect Mother Earth.

Feel glamorous in plus size fur coats!

I’m a bigger lady and always have trouble finding clothes that are plus-size AND glamorous-looking. I was in the market for a stylish new evening coat this winter – one that I could wear to friends’ dinner parties over the holidays or to a Broadway show with my husband – but the bigger coats that I kept coming were pretty plain-looking.

So, I turned to the Internet, did a search for plus-size fur coats, and voila, I had found my new coat. MadisonAvenueMall.com has a huge selection of fur coats, in a range of styles, shades and sizes – from petite to plus sizes fur coats. They had my size – size 22. Perfect! My only problem was deciding on what type of fur, color and length I wanted.

I debated for a few days over whether to get the full-length Mink Coat with Soft Brown Brushstrokes, the Natural Blue Fox Fur Coat (which is actually white), or the Black Chinchilla Trimmed Sheared Mink Jacket. I’d never been so spoiled for choice of so many plus-size fur coats before.

I finally decided to purchase the Blue Fox Fur Coat because lighter tones tend to suit my dark complexion. I was amazed at how affordable the price was – I expected to have to pay a lot more!

A week later, I received my new fur coat in the mail – and I absolutely love it. The fur is luxurious and chic, and the cut is so classic and flattering to my body shape. My friends keep commenting on how trim, stylish and glamorous I look!

The virtues of fur

The talk of the fashion world right now is fur. The Paris runways for Fall 2010 were littered with opulence fur hats, scarves, vests, jackets, dresses, skirts, blouses, pants, coats, gloves, leggings, boot and shoes. Fur, fur, and more fur!

Fur is timeless, and never fails to add a touch of glamour to your wardrobe. Today’s furs combine the styles of the past – think Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich – with a fresh and modern look. Whether you choose mink coat, fox fur, rabbit, sable, chinchilla or lynx, you’ll never fail to turn heads when you wear a little fur.

Not only is it glamorous, fur is also environmentally friendly. Fur is energy and resource efficient, and doesn’t use the chemicals that are used to produce synthetic materials. The fur industry is a natural and ecologically sustainable resource and uses only what nature provides.

Best of all, fur is durable and long lasting. With proper care and love, a fur coat will last you a lifetime, and can be something that’s passed down to your children.

The time is right to pick up a fur coat for this coming fall – at last year’s prices!
